Washington Wizards guard Bub Carrington has caused a storm after accidentally stating that the franchise tanked last season.
Talking with WUSA9 in a video posted Thursday, the 21-year-old guard let the NBA’s worst-kept secret slip out loud. He spoke as if sharing an obvious truth, though it was clearly meant to stay behind closed doors.
“We just haven’t been told yet to go be the best version of ourselves,” he answered the last question of a lengthy interview.
With the reporter pushing for clarity, he then spelled out the quiet part for everyone to hear. Signaling air quotes with his hands, he explained that the roster was held back to secure the top draft pick.
“We were trying to get AJ Dybantsa,” he admitted, referring to the first pick of the 2026 NBA Draft, presented by State Farm. “That’s no secret. But now, no one has handcuffs. Everyone’s shackles free.”
While Carrington focused on a new culture, his words triggered instant backlash on social media, with fans demanding action from the league office.
The timing is terrible for the Wizards. The NBA is actively trying to protect fair competition. Commissioner Adam Silver recently proposed fines over $10 million for teams that lose games on purpose. He also flattened draft odds to stop this exact behavior.
Selected 14th overall in 2024, Carrington is considered a vital part of the franchise’s future. He played in all 82 games during each of his first two seasons in the league, averaging 10.3 points per contest.
