Victor Wembanyama reaffirmed his support for students protesting across France, saying his life in the NBA has not distanced him from the difficulties they face.

Speaking after San Antonio’s preseason opener, the French star expanded on an Instagram post in which he said he would love to join the demonstrations.

“What touches me is that this isn’t something completely unfamiliar to me. I went to high school in Nanterre, which was already a stronghold of school blockades back then. It wasn’t so long ago that I was a high school student,” Wembanyama said. “I was fortunate enough to get out of that situation. It’s something I’m lucky not to experience anymore.”

The movement, which began in late September, has spread to hundreds of French high schools. Students have protested teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, deteriorating buildings and unequal access to education, alongside broader concerns about social inequality and their future.

For Wembanyama, those issues deserve attention well beyond the school gates.

“These are systemic inequalities, problems that run so deep… I’m glad that high school students, young people in general, are making their voices heard, because I hear them and I support them. And I hope the people at the very top will do the same.”

His comments follow earlier remarks about potentially taking a greater public role on social issues. While acknowledging that his privileged position shields him, Wembanyama said he was certain he would have a role to play in the future.
