The New York Knicks took a rare step by freezing all contract negotiations via an official statement. Management is halting talks with players eligible for extensions until later in the 2026–27 journey. The front office stated full attention must remain on the court.
“As an organization, our entire focus is on preparing for the upcoming season and delivering another year for our fans to be proud of. As a result, we will not be negotiating contract extensions until later in the season and will remain solely focused on preparing for the start of the season,” the defending NBA champions announced on Friday.
This unexpected freeze impacts Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, Miles McBride, and Tyler Kolek. Involved players have recently shared their frustration regarding the lack of progress in contract talks. However, team governor James Dolan has mandated that the front office stay below the second luxury tax apron. Massive new deals would push the payroll into dangerous territory.
By pausing negotiations for the foreseeable future, the Knicks are trying to get ahead of the situation and avoid distractions leading into the 2026–27 Regular Season. However, this move has concerned Knicks fans regarding the future of the team’s core players. Nevertheless, the franchise remains in a commanding position to retain key assets and secure new contract extensions moving forward. Delaying these talks past the October 19 deadline changes the mechanics of future deals, meaning any midseason agreement would have to replace upcoming player options rather than extend them.
With contract drama pushed back, the team coached by Mike Brown is focusing entirely on the court. Wrapping up their Preseason 2026 schedule next week, they host the Minnesota Timberwolves and play a home-and-home series against the Toronto Raptors. After that, they open their 82-game regular-season calendar at Madison Square Garden on October 20 against the Philadelphia 76ers.
