The Dallas Mavericks are waiving veteran center Dwight Powell, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported, ending his 12-year stint with the franchise.
The 35-year-old was on a non-guaranteed contract as Dallas finalized its roster ahead of the regular season. His departure closes a chapter spanning the Mavericks’ eras with Dirk Nowitzki, Luka Doncic and Cooper Flagg.
Head coach Dusty May had praised Powell’s contribution during preseason, highlighting his leadership and the team’s effectiveness with him on the floor. However, May stressed that roster decisions rested with president Masai Ujiri and general manager Mike Schmitz.
Powell appeared in both preseason games against Houston during the NBA China Games, averaging two points and three rebounds. Beyond those numbers, his physicality and screen setting had continued to earn praise as Dallas weighed its final roster decisions.
