The NBA’s 81st season begins with notable players in new locations, franchises selling for unprecedented amounts, and the second year of its latest television agreement.
Four decades ago, the NBA embarked on a media contract valued at $56 million annually, in the Michael Jordan’s third season. The current agreements are astonishingly valued at $6.9 billion each year, over 120 times the worth of the 1986-87 season.
In the 2025-26 season, the NBA generated approximately $14.5 billion in total revenue. Out of this, the 30 franchises collectively earned $13.7 billion, which averages $456 million per team, factoring in earnings from non-NBA events held at venues owned or managed by these teams. The remaining portion of the $14.5 billion is retained at the league level for investments and operating expenses.
Team revenues varied greatly, with the Golden State Warriors leading at $895 million and the Memphis Grizzlies at the lower end with $339 million.
These figures are after accounting for revenue sharing, which redistributed around $400 million to teams with lower revenues. This redistribution is supported by contributions from teams with higher revenues and 50% of the luxury tax revenue.
