Following the Philadelphia 76ers’ thrilling comeback win against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, LeBron James laughed off recent criticism from United States president Donald Trump.
A frequent target of the 80-year-old politician over the years, 41-year-old James chuckled when asked about the most recent remarks, offering a brief, dismissive response. “A slow news day at the office,” he said.
The firestorm ignited earlier when Trump took to social media to blast the veteran forward. The president accused him of disrespecting the country during the national anthem before Tuesday’s opening game of the 2026–27 NBA Regular Season. At New York’s Madison Square Garden, the league’s all-time leading scorer was seen moving around, mimicking a shot and swinging his arms as if taking a golf swing. Trump later doubled down on these complaints during a campaign rally, telling the crowd that the pregame display was ‘a big scandal kind of a story’. By Thursday’s matchup at Xfinity Mobile Arena, James appeared much more stationary.
The four-time champion went on to secure a win in his first regular-season home appearance with the franchise. He fully embraced the notoriously intense local fan base, taking their shifting energy in stride. “It was everything that I dreamed of and more. Got the boos. It was amazing. We deserved it. And then we got the cheers,” he reflected on his debut and the crowd’s vocal reactions.
The win advances the Sixers to 2–0. They will now try to protect their undefeated streak as they continue their home stand over the weekend, hosting the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday and the Detroit Pistons on Sunday.
