Despite Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo starting his Miami Heat journey with 35.5 points per game, his new team carries an unexpected 0–2 record in the 2026–27 NBA Regular Season. The consecutive defeats have raised immediate questions for the roster coached by Erik Spoelstra, following a loss to the Detroit Pistons at the Kaseya Center on Friday night.
“We just got to spark it,” replied the 31-year-old point forward when asked how the Heat can turn things around, emphasizing the need for a breakthrough. “Somebody has to spark it. That’s all.”
“We’ve seen it. We know it’s here,” he reflected on team chemistry. “I don’t know if it’s getting to know one another more now because it’s official games. I don’t know if it’s jitters, nerves, new season. I don’t know what it is. Sometimes, you’ve just got to shock the team. This is what we are going through right now. We had two games in our building that we were definitely shocked. I feel like it kind of raised the level of urgency for everybody.”
Nevertheless, Giannis refused to deflect blame. Taking total accountability as a franchise leader, he looked at his own performance first.
“We have to be urgent. We all have to be better. It starts with myself always. Anything I say, I always start with myself. I have to be better. I have to set the tone. I have to be more urgent,” he asserted.
Miami has to find that missing energy quickly. On the second night of a back-to-back, they play again tomorrow, Saturday, facing the Charlotte Hornets at the Spectrum Center.
