From Mexico City, the NBA is moving the market beyond traditional borders

MEXICO CITY – Standing inside Arena CDMX on a crisp Friday afternoon, watching the Indiana Pacers and Denver Nuggets wrap up their practices, you get a distinct sense of the NBA working in overdrive.

Local Dia de Muertos decorations are up, a vibrant custom court is laid out, and the altitude is already a talking point, forcing you to catch your breath at every turn. But this is actually the calm before Saturday’s game, which counts in the 2026–27 Regular Season. Nothing about the sheer scale of this production feels small.

This will mark the NBA’s 35th game in Mexico and their 16th regular-season contest here, cementing the country’s status as the league’s most frequent host outside of the United States and Canada. This fifth consecutive annual visit bridges a wider international calendar that includes upcoming showcases in Paris and Manchester, all part of an aggressive push to expand the league’s global footprint.

People around the facility are debating whether bringing this official matchup to Mexico City moves the needle for the European market. The simple answer is that it doesn’t. There is no direct connection.

Yet, watching the courtside setups and the multi-tier, breathtaking presentation of the venue, it’s clear the NBA is no longer compartmentalizing strategies. The international expansion and the standard North American calendar have entirely merged. Domestic priorities and global growth are as close as logistically possible.

Look no further than the corporate footprint tracking the Nuggets and Pacers to Mexico, which subtly bridges the NBA with Euroleague Basketball. Sprite is fully back in the NBA’s corner as its global beverage partner, while simultaneously serving as an official partner of Euroleague Basketball since March. Walking the arena floor today, their promotional presence is impossible to miss. By adding Nikola Jokic to its billboard roster, the brand has built a massive marketing engine that transitions into Mexico.

Even with Tyrese Haliburton sidelined for Indiana, the arena is guaranteed to be packed on Saturday because of the other guy. Watching the Joker casually shoot around during Denver’s media window cuts through all the noise. When the ball goes up tomorrow, overseas expansion strategies and domestic growth models stop mattering. It all just comes down to the privilege of watching a three-time MVP do things that completely defy logic.
