Erik Spoelstra offered a brief response after former Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers said on The Bill Simmons Podcast that coaching Giannis Antetokounmpo was difficult.
Rivers pointed to the two-time MVP’s preferred style of play as one reason the offense was “hard to get right.”
“Look, I like Doc, and I respect him,” Spoelstra told The Athletic after Saturday’s practice. “This is our business now.”
Miami entered Saturday ranked 27th in defensive rating, with opponents regularly hurting the Heat from beyond the arc. Spoelstra said he had seen progress, but added that it was “not happening fast enough, and it’s not happening with enough collective urgency and toughness.”
The Heat expected an adjustment on offense with a player who draws as much attention as Antetokounmpo. Spoelstra said that process was already further along than Miami’s work on defense.
“Our games are being won or lost defensively first, while we’re getting more connected offensively,” he said.
