As ESPN’s Tom Haberstroh tweeted, using advanced stats Giannis is the third best player of the NBA behind only Russell Westbrook and James Harden.

The stats which was taken into account were the RPM Wins, the WS, the VORP and EWA. “RPM Wins” provide an estimate of the number of wins each player has contributed to his team’s win total on the season. RPM Wins include the player’s Real Plus-Minus and his number of possessions played.

“WS” or Win Shares is an estimate of the number of wins contributed by a player. “VORP” or Value Over Replacement Player (available since the 1973-74 season in the NBA) is a box score estimate of the points per 100 TEAM possessions that a player contributed above a replacement-level (-2.0) player, translated to an average team and prorated to an 82-game season. Multiply by 2.70 to convert to wins over replacement.

And “EWA” or Estimated Wins Added is value added divided by 30, giving the estimated number of wins a player adds to a team’s season total above what a ‘replacement player’ would produce.

The point is that by the numbers, Giannis is the most important player in his team in the NBA after the two favorites to win the MVP award, Russell Westbrook and James Harden.
