The upcoming season and how his body fares in it, will decide if Dirk Nowitzki will check in for an extra year or possibly hang his shoes the following summer.

Dirk Nowitzki signed a new two-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks earlier this summer. If things go as planned, he wants to be there for both those seasons. But for that to happen, his body has to agree with him.

“I signed on for two more, so hopefully I can play those two,” Nowitzki told the Undefeated. “Last year with the Achilles [injury], I missed almost two months. It was frustrating and disappointing. Hopefully, injury-wise it will be a lot better this season and maybe I’ll play another one. We will see how it goes this [season]. We will see how the body feels.”

The 2011 NBA champion will be 40 years old next June. While he’ll never stop loving playing, practicing is a completely different scenario. One that he admits he doesn’t find particularly stimulating as he used to.

“As long as I enjoy competing and enjoy the games. … So many practices are tough to motivate yourself for. Games will always be fun. Competing will always be fun,” the great German added.
