A projected 2027 NBA draft lottery pick in 18-year-old Sayon Keita joins Michael Malone at North Carolina

Sayon Keita has committed to the University of North Carolina, as reported by Jonathan Givony on Tuesday evening, marking a major recruitment victory for the Tar Heels and a significant loss for FC Barcelona’s youth system.

The 18-year-old Malian center, widely regarded as one of the most intriguing international prospects, is confirmed to play under veteran NBA coach Michael Malone.

His arrival in Chapel Hill is seen as a cornerstone of Malone’s strategy to return the program to the pinnacle of the NCAA, as the 7-foot big brings a rare combination of length and high-level experience to the collegiate ranks. This move is the latest example of the growing talent drain from top-tier European clubs to the United States.

Standing at 6-foot-11 with a massive 7-foot-5 wingspan, he has spent his developmental years within the prestigious Barcelona academy, eventually breaking into the senior squad this past season. His resume already includes 20 professional appearances split between the Liga Endesa and the EuroLeague, where he demonstrated flashes of elite potential as a finisher, shot-blocker, and offensive rebounder.

By choosing college basketball to continue his development, Keita follows in the footsteps of former teammates like Kasparas Jakucionis and Dame Sarr, who also opted for the same path from Barca, with the former already in the NBA as a Miami Heat player.

Currently projected as a lottery pick in the 2027 NBA draft, the Bamako native is expected to be a key player for UNC during the 2026-27 season.
