Greece won’t host one of the four Qualifying Tournaments for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Greek Federation had submitted a file to host an Olympic Qualifiers tournament but the down payment deadline expired.

According to Greek Basketball Federation president Giorgos Vassilakopoulos, the Greek government didn’t provide any response to the Federation’s request for the necessary deposit funds. “We have filed our candidacy but we aren’t reliable regarding the financial terms, for which we have appealed to the government for about 90 days. Without any answer,” Vassilakopoulos had said to Sport 24.

“We aren’t responsible for this. We turned to the government but they are “deaf.” We haven’t received an answer in about one month and a half,” he had added.

Greece will be among the 24 countries that will participate in the Olympic Qualifiers. The other 23 are Angola, Brazil, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Lithuania, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Puerto Rico, Rusia, Senegal, Serbia, Slovenia, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Spain, Argentina, France, Australia, USA, Iran, Japan (Olympic Games host) and Nigeria have secured a spot in the Olympics.
