Hapoel Tel Aviv suffered a disappointing start to their Israeli League playoff campaign on Sunday, falling 82-74 at home to Maccabi Rishon in the opening game of the series.
Despite racing into an early 20-6 lead in the first quarter, Dimitris Itoudis’ side gradually lost momentum as the visitors clawed their way back into the contest. By halftime, Hapoel’s advantage had been cut to just two points at 45-43, setting the stage for a decisive second half.
Maccabi Rishon seized control after the break, dominating the third quarter and never looking back on their way to a valuable road victory. Amin Stephens was the standout performer for the winners, delivering an outstanding display with 27 points to lead his team.
For Hapoel Tel Aviv, Yam Madar once again emerged as the team’s leading figure, while Vasilije Micic provided solid support with 16 points. However, their efforts were not enough to prevent the home side from slipping to defeat.
The loss leaves Hapoel facing early pressure in the playoff series after squandering a promising start in front of their own fans.
In the other playoff game of the day, Hapoel Jerusalem secured an 82-71 victory over Hapoel HaEmek to take the early advantage in their series.
