Rolandas Skaisgirys is the new president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation.
The 57-year-old former player won the election, as announced by the LKF on Wednesday.
His mandate runs through September 2028.
With this governance shift, Skaisgirys replaced Mindaugas Balciunas, who resigned in September following institutional turmoil and public friction.
In addition to the changes in federation leadership, a major change previously arrived on the sidelines for the senior national team. Dainius Adomaitis has officially taken over as the new head coach, returning for a second stint following his previous tactical guidance that led to ninth-place finishes in the FIBA World Cup 2019 and EuroBasket 2017. The vacancy opened up when veteran strategist Rimas Kurtinaitis stepped down alongside his entire technical staff. The former play-caller had guided the program since October 2024, but chose to depart in September despite concluding his tenure with a hard-fought victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers.
Both Skaisgirys and Adomaitis face an immediate test. The primary objective for the Lithuanian national team is to navigate a difficult situation in Group J of the European Qualifiers and secure a spot in the main tournament. Currently holding a 4–4 record, they sit just one game outside the threshold needed to clinch a ticket to next summer’s final tournament in Qatar between August 27 and September 12. They have four games remaining, beginning with a matchup against the Paris 2024 Olympic Games bronze medalists, Serbia, in Klaipeda on November 26.
