Monaco is not expected to play in any French professional league next season.
Despite the club’s plea for a re-examination of its case, according to the local newspaper “Nice-Matin” the French federation has already refused to refer the case to its chamber of appeals.
According to the report: “The CNOSF (French National Olympic and Sports Committee) applied a precedent already established in the case of the Girondins de Bordeaux football club: only new elements supplementing what had already been debated before the Appeals Chamber could be taken into account. Monaco’s new financial situation and the new project presented since then could therefore not be examined on their merits”.
In theory, the club could make an appeal to an administrative court, but according to the same report, they are not going to proceed with that.
As a result, Monaco has practically already been excluded from the French professional leagues; Saint-Quentin, which was recently relegated, will be reinstated in the Betclic Elite, the top French division, while Fos-sur-Mer would return to Elite 2, the second division.
Monaco could end up in the third division, which is a semi-professional league, or even play only at the amateur level.
Monaco’s exclusion from French professional basketball confirmed
In a statement, the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) confirmed AS Monaco’s exclusion from professional basketball and invited the club to submit an application to compete in one of the federation-run leagues.
“At its meeting on Friday, August 28, the Federal Bureau reviewed the CNOSF’s conciliation proposal concerning the dispute between the French Basketball Federation and AS Monaco Basket-Ball SA. Following a presentation of all the elements of the case, as well as the club’s separate request for a reassessment of its new takeover plan, the Federal Bureau notified the club and the LNB of its decisions.
The Federal Bureau acknowledged the CNOSF’s conciliation proposal, which called on the club to accept the July 31, 2026 decision of the financial section of the FFBB Appeals Chamber. That ruling upheld the June 24, 2026 decision by the National Basketball League’s financial oversight body to deny AS Monaco Basket-Ball SA admission to the professional Betclic ÉLITE and ÉLITE 2 championships for the 2026/2027 season.
With a place now vacant in Betclic ÉLITE, it will be up to the LNB to invite a club to submit an application. In the event of a vacancy in ÉLITE 2, the Federal Bureau has, in accordance with the regulations, designated SAS Fos Provence Basket, a Nationale Masculine 1 club, as eligible to apply for promotion to ÉLITE 2 before the relevant LNB bodies for the 2026/27 season.
Furthermore, the Federal Bureau, which declined the request for the Appeals Chamber to reassess the case, invited AS Monaco Basket-Ball SA to prepare an application to enter its team in the federation-run leagues, allowing a basketball project to continue in the Principality of Monaco.
It was reiterated that any such admission would be subject to review and approval by the Financial Control Commission, as well as compliance with all applicable FFBB regulations.”
