Teenage players have been implicated in allegations of hazing at an elite French sports institute

France is facing a crisis over allegations of severe hazing and violence against underage players at the National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance, better known globally as INSEP.

Older athletes reportedly assaulted newly arrived recruits, aged 15 and 16, during the night at the Paris boarding facility. Among teenagers struck during the incident, one minor required medical tests outside the institute for abdominal pain, though officials later stated the results were reassuring.

The French Federation of Basketball and academy directors reacted swiftly in September, issuing provisional suspensions to ten players of the basketball team, labeled as Pole France, implicated in the abuse of younger athletes. Institutional leaders launched an internal investigation and reported the case to the public prosecutor for a judicial inquiry. Management emphasized that intimidation, humiliation, and physical abuse directly contradict the values of the training institute.

The disciplinary actions immediately disrupted the development program. With the main roster severely depleted, the FFBB formally reacted this week by withdrawing the academy’s elite Pole France program from its usual spot in the Nationale Masculine 1 third-tier league for the entire 2026–27 season. Their removal triggered an automatic general forfeit, ending their campaign before it even started.

French sports officials now face mounting pressure to protect young athletes and eliminate aggressive initiation rituals.

INSEP has produced some of the most famous French players of recent years, including Tony Parker and Evan Fournier. Ronny Turiaf and Boris Diaw are also among the institution’s notable alumni.
