It has been rumored since summer and now it’s confirmed. Trabzonspor has announced its withdrawal from the Turkish League due to financial struggles, with a statement released Tuesday.

This is a huge blow for the Turkish league that is now left with 15 teams instead of 16.

Part of Trabzonspor’s statement reads:

“Unfortunately, we will not be able to take part in professional basketball leagues in the 2018-2019 season. Due to the heavy financial burdens created by the accumulation of years, and the global economic crisis, we could not overcome the problems caused by the rise in exchange rates. […]

We would like to express our thanks to Ömer Onan, the Basketball Federation President Hidayet Türkoğlu and the Basketball Federation Chief Executive, who have always shown their support in the troubled process. When deciding to withdraw from the league, we would like to note that we will try to fulfill our financial obligations to the basketball family, to the extent that our economic conditions permit.”
