Once a prized NBA prospect, the Italian guard is rediscovering his promise and leads the EuroCup in average PIR

Nico Mannion once headed toward the NBA carrying the expectations that follow a five-star prospect. A gifted playmaker out of Arizona, he joined the Golden State Warriors with an opportunity to turn that promise into a professional career at the highest level.

Six years and several changes of direction later, Rome is providing the stage for his rebirth.

Through four BKT EuroCup games with Roma Basketball, the 25-year-old leads the competition in average PIR at 26.0 and ranks second in scoring with 21.2 points per game, adding 5.8 assists. After years of trying to establish where he belonged, Mannion is becoming the player opponents must build their defensive plans around.

The numbers are striking, but so is the consistency behind them. He opened with 29 points against Bahcesehir College Istanbul, followed by 21 against Lietkabelis Panevezys. Against Balkan Botevgrad, he combined 14 points with 7 assists, before delivering another 21 points and 7 assists against Kids&Us Manresa. Whether Roma has won or lost, its starting guard has remained a central offensive presence.

His efficiency gives that production additional weight. Mannion is converting 80.8% of his two-point attempts and shooting 34.8% from three, and he has yet to miss a free throw. He draws 6.0 fouls per game, finding ways to keep the scoreboard moving while also creating opportunities for his teammates.

It is a different picture from the one that emerged after his arrival in Europe. Selected 48th by Golden State in 2020, Mannion played 30 NBA games before choosing Virtus Bologna the following summer. That move brought a EuroCup title in 2022, but little room for him to leave an individual mark: 2.1 points and 1.7 assists in just over 11 minutes per game.

His subsequent EuroLeague journey offered glimpses of progress without a lasting breakthrough. Across Virtus, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz and Armani Olimpia Milan, he averaged 6.4 points and 2.9 assists in 76 appearances. A brief stay in Spain ended with a return to Italy through Varese, while a more substantial opportunity in Milan eventually gave way to another reduced role.

Rome has changed the scale of his involvement. Mannion has started every EuroCup game and is averaging almost 28 minutes, with the responsibility to score, organize and stay involved throughout. The contrast with his previous EuroCup appearance is dramatic: the young reserve on a championship team has returned as the competition’s early statistical leader.

Roma’s 2-2 record shows that individual excellence has not solved everything, and four games are only a beginning. Yet this start already gives Mannion something concrete to build on. The promise that once accompanied him to the NBA is finding expression in performances, possession after possession.

In Rome, his career has fresh momentum, and his rebirth is becoming one of the EuroCup’s most compelling early stories.
