Alexey Shved scored 32 points and dished out seven assists as Khimki Moscow beat Lokomotiv Kuban 77 – 72 at home in Game 2 of the VTB League best-of-five quarterfinals and took a 2-0 lead in the series.

It was a one-possession game with 38 seconds left to play but then Malcolm Thomas hit a jumper to put his team up by five. Loko players then missed consecutive 3-point attempts and the game was over.

Tyler Honeycutt notched 11 points and seven boards while Thomas finished with 10 points and six rebounds. He also had this key block down the stretch.

The guests had been up in the score 34 – 44 early in the second half but their opponents responded with an 11-0 run to make it a close game until establishing a lead in the mid of fourth period thanks to a 9 – 1 run that transformed a 61 – 60 score to 70 – 62.

Dmitry Kulagin scored 19, Dmitry Khvostov 13 and Chris Babb 12 for the team from Krasnodar that will play a do-or-die Game 3 on the road on Monday.

New Orleans Pelicans GM Dell Demps was among the game’s attendants.
