Team manager Nikola Vujcic had traveled to the States in order to negotiate with Spahija. The Croatian coach will leave the role of the Atlanta Hawks assistant coach to return to the Israeli power house where he coached in the past during the 2006-07 season.

Spahija and Vujcic share a personal relationship since they have collaborated as the star player and the coach in the Croatian national team. Maccabi was trying to secure the return of coach David Blatt with no results and after the end of the negotiations with the former EuroLeague champ, Spahija emerged as the favorite to take the job.

Former Maccabi coach Guy Goodes and former Maccabi captain Tal Burstein are going to be part of Spahija’s coaching stuff.

The final contract is expected to have an opt out option after the first two seasons.
