Messina explained that his obligations with the Spurs leave him very little time for the national team and this will not change, as a new two year contract is ready for him in San Antonio: “I am very pleased. You feel it right away if there’s something bad in the air and instead in San Antonio they made me feel wanted. They waited for the right moment and now there is a new contract that awaits and I must sign it. ”

Under this new deal and with the national teams having to compete in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, Messina simply can be part of the Spurs and also sit on the bench of the national team: “I was hoping that I could, but I was also afraid that this couldn’t be possible. For the last two summers, the Spurs allowed me to leave, but the activity of a franchise does not end with the end of the season. There are the work outs, there’s the preseason and Popovich is also increasingly busy with the USA national team. It was inevitable to be asked to have a  greater presence. “
