Sergio Scariolo spoke after the victory against MoraBanc Andorra (97-90), a result that consolidates Real Madrid‘s position as leaders of the ACB League with a record of 23 wins and two losses in 25 games, but which was anything but easy.
“It was quite a dangerous game, as on other occasions, because the danger becomes a serious problem due to the scheduling conflict between a very tough EuroLeague game, with that outcome and the return leg in the early hours of the morning, and the games next week,” said Scariolo in a press conference.
Regarding the team’s overall performance in the ACB, Scariolo urged caution despite the numbers. “With all this, we have just enough energy to compete on the road in the EuroLeague. Regarding the record, it’s worth noting that poor analysts might assume we always have to win. We think we’re a good team, but there are many others with ACB-level competition, since no other European league, not even close, has anything comparable. But we’re only making a partial assessment,” he pointed out.
The coach also left the door open to a more demanding approach to managing effort during the decisive stretch of the season. “There will be games where we’ll almost have to let our guard down because teams in the EuroLeague playoffs don’t get any extra support here. In other countries, they rest or adjust the schedule a bit. At that point, we’ll have to make even more drastic decisions, which is why it’s important to maintain this cushion to extend this bonus and concentrate our efforts on the EuroLeague,” he stated.
But the highlight of his press conference was when he addressed Mario Hezonja’s situation, whose future could involve a return to the NBA. “Mario has an NBA exit at some point this summer, and everyone is aware of that. He’s having a very good season, and I don’t know what decision he’ll make. We’re very focused on the present, and the club is constantly working on that throughout the year and, of course, in the summer to build the team. That’s more of a question for the club; I’m more focused on the competition.”
“Mario (Hezonja) tiene una salida NBA en un momento dado del verano y todo el mundo es consciente de ello”
“Está haciendo muy buena temporada, no sé qué decisión tomará”
