The LAPD released a video from the incident with the late Tyler Honeycutt and the events prior to the player’s death which was ruled a suicide by the coroner’s office.

On July 7, Honeycutt’s mother, Lisa Stazel, called 911 asking the police to come to her house at Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles because her son was acting erratically. The police found Honeycutt barricaded at the residence and when he opened fire at the officers, the SWAT team intervened. Honeycutt was later pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted wound.

The video, that was released one month and two weeks after the tragic incident, begins with Honeycutt’s mother calling 911 to express her worry about her son’s erratic behavior by saying that “he’s having a psychotic break” and that he “has guns in the house”.

“He’s hallucinating. I already called the mental hospital and they said if he becomes aggressive, which he just did, to call 911 and tell them that he has guns in the house.”

Honeycutt’s mother sobbingly said to 911 that her son “has a shotgun and a pistol in the house”. “You need to hurry because I’m afraid he’s going to pull a gun out on himself.”

When the police arrived at the scene, Stazel told the officers that her son is a professional basketball player and that he spent six months “sucking laughing gas overseas”. “I think it scrambled his brain,” she added. “You need to hurry because I’m afraid he’s going to pull a gun out on himself,” Stazel later said to them.

The police approached the residence and tried to talk to Honeycutt. The last part of the footage shows the officers receiving fire from the house.
