That makes sense. Wembanyama is the franchise centerpiece, the defensive anchor and the clearest symbol of San Antonio’s future. But if the Spurs want to become a real contender, they need more than one superstar. They need someone who can grow with him.
That is why Stephon Castle matters.
In the 2025-26 regular season, Castle averaged 16.7 points, 7.4 assists, and 5.3 rebounds in 30.0 minutes per game. He also shot 47.1% from the field and 33.2% from three. Those numbers show that he is not just a supporting piece. He is already carrying real responsibility in San Antonio’s offense.
The assist number is especially important. Castle is not only scoring next to Wembanyama. He is helping run the offense, create advantages and punish defenses when they send extra attention toward San Antonio’s star big man.
That matters because Wembanyama is not a normal big. He can score inside, stretch the floor, run in transition and create late in the shot clock. To maximize that kind of player, the Spurs need more than a basic pass-first guard. They need someone who can make quick decisions, attack gaps, and control the pace.
Castle is showing signs that he can become that player. His scoring gives San Antonio a real second option. When defenses tilt toward Wembanyama, Castle can get downhill and keep the possession moving. His 47.1% field goal percentage is also encouraging for a young guard with real on-ball responsibility.
There are still clear areas to improve. Castle shot 33.2% from three, so defenses do not yet have to fully respect him as an outside shooter. If that number rises, spacing around Wembanyama becomes much more dangerous.
Ball security is another key step. Castle averaged 3.2 turnovers per game, which is understandable for a young playmaker averaging 7.4 assists, but still something the Spurs need him to reduce. The next stage of his development is about keeping the aggression while making cleaner decisions.
If Castle becomes a more reliable shooter and a cleaner decision-maker, San Antonio’s offense becomes much harder to guard. Defenses would have to choose between loading up on Wembanyama or giving Castle space to attack.
Castle is not yet discussed as one of the NBA’s biggest young stars. But inside the Spurs’ future, his role is becoming harder to ignore.
