European basketball has lost one of its more beloved members on Monday night, as CAI Zaragoza announced the passing away of coach Jose Luis Abos at the age of 53. Abos had stepped down as head coach of Zaragoza on 4 August, announcing that he had to battle a disease whose ‘process of treatment could take a considerable amount of time and it is not possible to predict how long it will need’.

Abos was named the assistant coach to head coach Mario Pesquera at Natwest Zaragoza back in 1992. He won a silver medal with Spain at the 1996 European Championship for Men U22 in Turkey, as an assistant to Gustavo Aranzana. In 2009 he became the coach of Zaragoza and led his hometown team to Liga Endesa. Under his guide, Zaragoza became again a point of reference in the Spanish league and a Eurocup regular.

As it was announced a moment of silence will be held before every Eurocup game this week in his memory.
