Shane Larkin, star guard for both the Turkish national team and Anadolu Efes, spoke to Eurohoops ahead of EuroBasket 2025.
The experienced playmaker reflected on his summer with the national team, the rising performances of Alperen Şengün and Adem Bona, the arrival of Anadolu Efes’ new coach Igor Kokoskov, and much more, offering insight into both his club and national team campaigns.
Larkin has high praise for Turkey’s national team as they prepare for EuroBasket.
“Everyone has grown and improved. Not just a few players—everyone on the roster has taken steps forward. They’ve become more experienced and worked on their individual games. They’ve had the chance to cover some of the gaps they had before. So, for this year’s national team… I’d say it’s the most talented roster I’ve been part of in the last five years,” he said.
Larkin highlighted the development of Alperen Sengun, noting that the biggest change in his game is that he now plays more from the perimeter.
“Houston did a great job giving him the chance to handle the ball more and become a key offensive player… like Jokic in some ways. You don’t find many players with his physique who can pass, score, and shoot this well. FIBA basketball is different from the NBA, but efficiency is key here. If he can play smart in tight spaces, he could be one of the tournament’s best players and help carry us to a medal.”
On the NBA side, Larkin commented on the potential of the Rockets duo of Sengun and Kevin Durant.
“They’ll be very tough defensively for other teams. Durant is one of the best shooters over 2.13 meters, which makes it hard for defenses to double inside. Alperen can run handoff plays with KD, creating constant mismatches. The team has built a strong roster around them, including smart players like Fred VanVleet. Even with Durant added, they are still young and can grow over the next 4–5 years in the Western Conference.”
Larkin also praised Adem Bona’s defensive impact.
“His energy is contagious. He communicates well, which helps the team play better basketball. His presence is great for us. He can change the flow of a game with his energy. I’m excited to watch his development—he’s excellent on defense.”
He added that Furkan Korkmaz is sometimes overlooked despite his talent and drive.
“He’s very talented and hungry—you can see the fire in him. He works hard on both offense and defense. When healthy and motivated, he can be a huge addition. He’s very active in practice and constantly communicates. This summer is meaningful for him and the squad. Furkan can be a momentum-changer when needed.”
Turning to club basketball, Larkin shared his thoughts on Anadolu Efes and their new head coach Igor Kokoskov.
“I’ve talked to him several times, including on the phone. We discussed the roster and style of play. He has an NBA mentality about managing the game and shaping the offense. Many people told me he’s one of the best offensive minds. I’m excited.”
He also highlighted the club’s strengthened roster.
“Weiler-Babb was Defensive Player of the Year last season. Vincent Poirier is one of the best shot-blockers. We are solid defensively at guard and pivot. Cordinier is long, wide, and athletic. PJ Dozier is long and athletic. We also have strong forwards like Ercan and Rolands Smits. Papagiannis can be used in switches and is also very athletic.”
