Riga, Latvia – Lithuania is back in the EuroBasket Quarterfinals for the first time since 2015, after taking down hosts Latvia in Riga.
One of Lithuania’s leaders, Denver Nuggets center Jonas Valanciunas, spoke after the game.
“It was a derby, a fun game to play, great atmosphere—what more can you ask?” said Valanciunas.
He didn’t want to frame the win as a statement, despite injury issues. With Rokas Jokubaitis out, Arnas Velicka stepped up big time.
“It’s a game, you know. Two teams come in and they battle, so there’s no statement. We had one guy out—we missed Rokas big time. He’s a key player for us, but Arnas stepped up today. He did an amazing job directing the team, getting guys open, and generating shots. It was unbelievable.”
Valanciunas emphasized team play.
“We always play as a team. No matter who takes a shot or who leads, we stick together and help each other. That’s our identity.”
Lithuania will face Greece or Israel in the Quarterfinals.
“We don’t have preferences. We don’t choose opponents. They’ll play their game, and we’ll see who advances. Then we scout and prepare.”
Kristaps Porzingis had a strong game, but couldn’t carry Latvia past Lithuania.
“He’s a great player and has proven it many times. But moment by moment, we managed to win the game.”
Valanciunas also spoke about his playing time, having spent less than 10 minutes on the court.
“It’s a question for the coach—I’m here to play and to cheer. I love my guys and support them no matter what I do on or off the court. As I’ve said many times, it’s a team sport. We all need each other.”
Winning the Baltic derby doesn’t make it any more special for Jonas.
“Every win is sweet, every loss bitter. We look at who is in front of us, prepare, and fight until the end,” Valanciunas concluded.
