Riga, Latvia – Alan Ibrahimagic will continue as the acting head coach of Germany for the rest of EuroBasket 2025.
Alex Mumbru temporarily returned to his role in the Round of 16 affair opposite Portugal on Saturday but will no longer serve as head coach of the senior national team for the rest of the tournament.
On Monday, the German Basketball Federation shared an update on the coaching situation. Specifically, 46-year-old Mumbru will be available for the coaching staff from the bench with 47-year-old Ibrahimagic taking over head-coaching duties during games.
The Spanish tactician was hospitalized for the majority of the preliminary round in Tampere, before being medically cleared and continuing recovery in the team hotel. From there, he traveled alongside players and coaches to Riga for the knockout stage of the tournament and was named head coach for the matchup versus Portugal in Xiaomi Arena, but was well shy of usual actions on the sidelines. Moving to the Quarterfinals and a game against Slovenia on Wednesday, the updated status will apply.
“Over the past few days, I’ve realized that I’m not physically ready to actively coach the team from the sidelines. Therefore, Alan Ibrahimagic will take over my role as head coach. I will help from the bench, and we will continue to work closely together as a coaching team. The team’s success is our top priority,” said Mumbru, confirming the plan moving forward in EuroBasket.
With Johannes Voigtmann ruled out for the rest of the tournament, the remaining players are expected to be available on Wednesday.
