The Serbian national team was among the top favorites to win at the 2025 EuroBasket but was eliminated in the Round of 16, losing to Finland.
After returning to Belgrade, head coach Svetislav Pešić stated that he has no intention of resigning. Despite this, some reports in Serbia suggested that the experienced tactician and the Federation would part ways.
The Serbian Basketball Federation (KSS) quickly denied these reports, confirming that Pešić has a contract until September 30, 2025, and that talks about the next steps will take place in the coming days.
“The Basketball Federation of Serbia informs the public that the information appearing in certain media outlets regarding the dismissal of Svetislav Pešić from the position of head coach of the Serbian men’s national team is false.
Svetislav Pešić has a contract with the Federation until September 30, 2025. In the coming days, the leadership of the Federation will hold talks with the head coach, analyze the results from the European Championship, and make decisions in the best interest of Serbian basketball and the national team.
The Federation fully supports head coach Pešić, who has led the national team to its last two gold medals, brought Serbia to podium finishes at the previous two tournaments, and restored the stature of the national team and the trust of its fans.
The Basketball Federation of Serbia appeals to all media outlets to verify any information related to the work of the Federation and the national team with official sources before publishing, to avoid misinformation that could harm Serbian basketball.
The Federation will continue to inform the public in a timely and transparent manner about all relevant decisions and activities,” the official press release stated.
Pešić returned to the national team at the start of a new Olympic cycle. Although he was eliminated in the Round of 16 at EuroBasket 2022 by Italy, he remained as head coach and delivered excellent results, leading Serbia to the final of the 2023 World Cup and winning bronze at the 2024 Olympic Games.
