In the press conference ahead of the 2025 EuroBasket Final, Turkey coach Ergin Ataman said that he’s “the best coach in Europe over the last 10 years”.
After the Final and Germany’s win over Turkey, Dennis Schroder reacted to Ataman’s statement.
“Ataman, f-ck out of here! Yeah, f-ck out of here Ataman. He’s saying he’s the best coach in the last 10 years, my ass!” Schroder said during a Twitch livestream. He made the comment while in the team bus as he and the rest of the Germany players returned to their hotel after being crowned EuroBasket champions.
Despite Turkey finishing with the silver medal, Ataman was named EuroBasket Best Coach. Schroder would’ve obviously prefered to see Germany acting coach Alan Ibrahimagic win the award as the latter led the national team to winning the gold medal for the first time since 1993. He undertook head coach duties in the tournament in light of Alex Mumbru recovering from an illness.
“Shout out to Alan. What he did wasn’t easy,” Schroder said in the post-game presser after the Final and the win over Turkey. “Alex is of course the head coach but what he [Alan] did as head coach being on the sidelines, making sure to take the right timeouts, right substitutions, coaching us, was incredible. We went 9-0. That’s a hell of coaching staff but Alan… big time for that.”
Ataman coached Turkey toward their first EuroBasket medal after the silver in 2001.
Schroder himself claimed EuroBasket MVP. He had a clutch performance in the Final, scoring six straight points with his team down 83 – 82 and 1:15 left, finishing with 16 points and 12 assists.
