Alex Mumbru has been released from hospital care.
“I’m feeling better,” he described the recovery. “I’m finally going home. No more hospital.”
After returning to Barcelona upon a limited spell with the senior national team of Germany in EuroBasket 2025, the 46-year-old tactician was once more hospitalized but is now cleared to combine the remaining process with rest at home. In his hometown, he underwent additional treatment for over one month.
Mumbru was initially admitted to a Tampere hospital before the start of the preliminary round in the Finnish city. After being medically cleared, he rejoined the national team in the knockout stage of Riga to mostly help lead assistant Alan Ibrahimagic and the rest of the coaching staff in tactics and game preparation.
Dealing with a severe case of pancreatitis, he reportedly lost 16 kilograms.
With Ibrahimagic mainly in charge of head-coaching duties, Germany captured EuroBasket gold. The international schedule resumes in Group E of the European Qualifiers of the FIBA World Cup 2027, but it remains unclear whether Mumbru can be cleared to return to his assigned role in the upcoming FIBA window. Germany is set to play at home against Israel on November 28 and visit Cyprus on December 1.
The top three seeds in a six-game double-legged round-robin schedule will clinch a berth to the final Qualifiers stage to play a new six-game schedule in Group K, opposite the top three countries out of Group F. The top three will then qualify for the World Cup.
