The basketball world is still buzzing with everything that happened during the EuroBasket 2025 Final.
FIBA delivered a top-class event that made worldwide headlines, and their partner 1хBet was there all along for the ride. Record television audiences around Europe were glued to the screen for the outcome of the games, but also when all was said and done, the three medal winners, Germany, Turkey, and Greece, made history and broke long-time curses.
World and European champions
Germany managed to win Eurobasket gold for the second time in their history and for the first time outside their borders. They did win the title back in 1993; however, they did it at home.
Fast forward to 2023, with Germany winning their first gold in the FIBA World Cup, a feat that they couldn’t deliver even during the Dirk Nowitzki era.
On top of that, winning the European crown, while being the World Champions, puts them in a select company.
In the past, the Soviet Union in the 60s (1967 – 1969) and the 80s (1981 – 1982) held both crowns, Yugoslavia did it in the 70s (1977 – 1978), twice the 90s (1989-1991, 1997-1998) and also after the turn of the century (2001-2002) and most recently Spain (2019-2022) achieved the same status.
Germany becomes just the fourth European country in history to achieve this milestone, and that pretty much says everything about the quality of the team.
First medal outside the borders
Turkey was aiming for their first-ever gold in a major FIBA tournament at the senior level. They feel short in the final; however, winning the silver was not a small feat.
This is the third silver medal in the history of the Turkish national team. It has to be noted, however, that Turkey had 24 years to win a Eurobasket silver since hosting the tournament in 2001.
Their most recent success was 15 years ago, when the country also hosted the FIBA World Cup, and the national team also got the silver.
Giannis breaking the “curse”
Greece has a long history of success in FIBA tournaments, winning the Eurobasket on home soil in 1987, then getting the silver in 1989 when the tournament was still held every two years, and then getting back to the Eurobasket throne in 2005, followed by a FIBA World Cup silver in 2006 and a Eurobasket bronze in 2009.
And that was the end of it until now.
Despite Greece having a competitive roster that included Giannis Antetokounmpo, the team following the 2009 success couldn’t get back to the semifinals until this year.
Giannis and Greece finally did it, and despite the disappointment of losing to Turkey, they bounced back and won bronze against Finland.
This is the first FIBA medal in Giannis’ career, who has already been a multiple-time All-Star and MVP, plus an NBA champion.
