Euroleague Basketball’s independent disciplinary judge has suspended and fined Unics Kazan player Anton Ponkrashov for an incident that took place in the visit to play Aris Thessaloniki to Round 8 of the Eurocup Regular Season Round 8 on Wednesday, December 2, 2015.

With 1:54 left in the third quarter of that game, Mr. Ponkrashov was penalized with an unsportsmanlike foul for striking Aris player Vassilis Symtsak in the face and neck. Mr. Symtsak left the game wearing a neck brace and did not return.

The independent disciplinary judge ruled that the incident was unprovoked, intentional, meant to cause harm, and “particularly violent”. As such, the judge has handed down a four-game suspension for Mr. Ponkrashov, applicable to the next games for which he is eligible in the Eurocup, the Turkish Airlines Euroleague or both. In addition, the judge has fined Mr. Ponkrashov €40,000.
