Mateusz Ponitka has been passed the torch from Kristaps Porzingis, as he is named the Eurocup Rising Star of the 2015-2016 season.
With Stelmet Zielona Gora, the 22-year old Polish forward scored 14.5 points, grabbed 6.5 rebounds and dished 2 assists per game, helping Zielona Gora reach the competition’s quarterfinals for the first time ever in the history of the club.
In order to achieve this, Zielona Gora eliminated Unics Kazan, one of the heavy favorites to win the trophy in a double knock-out series, after winning the Russians 54 – 71 on the road! Ponitka put his signature in his team’s impressive qualification, by finishing this game with 18 points and 3 steals, also being a defensive “exterminator” who hurt his opponents’ efforts to score.
This has generally been a superb season for the Polish player whos talents and strengths expand on both ends of court. One which gave us just a taste of things yet to come from the gifted Ponitka
