Virtus Bologna owner Massimo Zanetti spoke to La Gazzetta Dello Sport and highlighted that EuroLeague remains the team’s biggest target even if the turn of events won’t allow Virtus to make its EuroLeague return this upcoming season.

“Virtus deserves to be among the best teams in Europe. We have been talking about it for a long time, I was convinced that this season we would have earned the right to play at the most important league. And I don’t despair. I remain confident. I have hope”, Zanetti mentioned, as adapted by virtus.it. The Italian team hoped to make its re-appearance to Europe’s top competition in the 2020-21 campaign, though the decision to cancel the current season resulted in the same 18 teams taking part next season.

Zanetti then talked about the Italian championship and shared his opinion on canceling the season without proclaiming a champion.

“Titles are won on the court. But inside of me, I remain convinced that we would have done very well even in the playoffs. However, I didn’t like certain jokes from certain professionals who pointed out our defeat with Reyer for one point in the Italian Cup, but in the championship, we won both in Bologna and in Venice. But I repeat, the title must be awarded only at the end of all the matches. As in cycling, it’s the last kilometer that counts”.

“It was a tough period and the economic difficulties are evident. The closure of bars, restaurants, and hotels has also penalized us, but I remain optimistic. An entrepreneur has the obligation to be one: I have about 60 companies around the world and I am sure that we will start again, and my commitment to the sport will not fail, indeed if possible I will do even more. Sport is the beauty of life “, added Zanetti.
