Fenerbahce officially hires Igor Kokoskov

A new era for Fenerbahce Beko starts with Igor Kokoskov assuming head coaching responsibilities.

Fenerbahce Beko officially appointed Igor Kokoskov at the head coach position as the successor of Zeljko Obradovic, the Turkish club announced on Saturday. Eurohoops previously reported that the 48-year-old Serbian is finalizing a three-year deal to take over Fener.

Fener is one of the biggest sports clubs in the world,” he noted per the press release, “We will give our best to keep fans happy by winning lots of basketball games and trophies.”

Kokoskov is coming from the Sacramento Kings and his assistant coach role under head coach Luke Walton. He is also the head coach of the Serbia national team.

“I am very happy and excited to join the Fenerbahce family,” he said referring to his next challenge, “I’m thrilled and very thankful for this opportunity. I’m very aware of the history and tradition that this sports club has.”

In 2018, as the Phoenix Suns boss became the first NBA head coach born and raised outside of North America. He previously served as an assistant at several NBA teams.

“I feel obligated to the Fenerbahce fans and the people who brought me here to give them the best of my abilities, experience and knowledge to help this club keep being successful as it is,” he said sending a message to the Fener supporters, “Fenerbahce fans love their basketball team so we will give our best to keep them happy by winning lots of basketball games and trophies.”

His lengthy and successful career at the international level is highlighted by him guiding Slovenia to the gold medals in the 2017 FIBA EuroBasket. He was the head coach at the Georgia national team from 2008 to 2015.
