Seven EuroLeague clubs met on Sunday in Athens and raised a number of mainly financial issues that have to do with the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and the revenues during the COVID season.

While the money distribution have not been reduced albeit with a different balance between sports pool and market pool, as it was decided last July, there were voices in the seven clubs meeting about extra financial help due to COVID from the league to the clubs-shareholders.

Those issues are going to be discussed at a new meeting with EuroLeague CEO Jordi Bertomeu present and the 11 clubs-shareholders who were the founding members of the new EuroLeague format invited. The date of the meeting is not fixed yet, however, it will happen before the end of April.

It has to be noted that according to Eurohoops sources, all 11 club-shareholders were also invited to the Athens meeting, but the three Spanish teams, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Baskonia, and also Fenerbahce ultimately they were not present.

On the other hand, Barcelona denied according to “Mundo Deportivo” that they knew anything about the Athens meeting and they insisted that they were not invited.

It remains to be seen how things will end up and while many details about the discussions in Athens are not known yet, the core of the debate is strictly financial.
