Losing two games in a row in the Fernando Buesa Arena first against Bayern Munich and then against Zalgiris Kaunas, Baskonia is reportedly considering to part ways with its head coach Joan Peñarroya.

According to Djordje Matic from Meridian Sport, in fact, the Basque team is thinking about bringing on board Ioannis Sfairopoulos, who last coached in the EuroLeague during the 2021-22 season, leading Maccabi Tel Aviv. The second option involves Andrea Trinchieri, a free agent after ending his adventure with Bayern Munich at the end of the 2022-23 season, as Pablo Laso replaced him in Germany.

Starting this year’s EuroLeague with a balanced defeat (79-77) against Real Madrid at home, they found their first victory on the road against ALBA Berlin, avoiding the hosts’ comeback. Finally, they couldn’t make it both against Pablo Laso’s team and the Lithuanian side, leaving Baskonia on a 1-3 record for the 16th spot, right above ASVEL and the yellow-and-blue German team.

Ending his first season with Baskonia in the 9th place in the EuroLeague standings, missing the playoffs in the last Round of the Regular Season, the red-and-blue side couldn’t go deep in the ACB Playoffs, losing against Joventut Badalona 2-0 in the Quarter-Finals after ending the Regular Season as 2nd.

Before heading to the Basque Country, the 54-year-old head coach stayed on MoraBanc Andorra’s bench from 2010 to 2018, making his way up first with BAXI Manresa (2018-19), then winning the Basketball Champions League in back-to-back fashion with San Pablo Burgos, and finally ending up in Valencia, where he played the 2021-22 EuroCup.
