After Gordon Herbert declined, Gianmarco Pozzecco has agreed to take over as head coach at ASVEL. According to Eurohoops sources, he will also remain the head coach of the Italian national team. Eurodevotion and Giuseppe Sciascia were the first to report that the Italian was a candidate to fill the vacant position in the Villeurbane team.

The Italian Basketball Federation gave Pozzecco the premission, and therefore he will be making his EuroLeague debut as the head coach of the French side, which parted ways with coach T.J. Parker after losing the first four games in the elite European competition, 17 in a row including previous season.

It’s also expected that Edoardo Casalone will be joining him at ASVEL as an assistant.

The 51-year-old coach began his coaching career in 2012 with Orlandina Basket and coached Varese before joining Cedevita as an assistant. After two years in Ljubljana, he returned to Italy and briefly led Fortitudo Bologna before taking over at Dinamo Sassari in 2019. Two years later, he joined Ettore Messina’s coaching staff at Olimpia Milano before succeeding Romeo Sacchetti at the helm of the Italian national team.

As a head coach, he won the FIBA Europe Cup and Italian Supercup in 2019. He also achieved commendable results with the national team, leading them to eighth place in the 2022 EuroBasket and the 2023 World Cup.
