Reuniting with Luca Banchi, Latvian shooting guard Rihards Lomazs signs with Virtus Segafredo Bologna

Virtus Segafredo Bologna announced a new player in the form of Rihards Lomazs on Friday.

Lomazs, 27, inked a contract for the remainder of the 2023-24 season, as noted by the Italian club.

Per the press release: “Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna S.p.A. announces that it has reached an agreement until June 30, 2024 with Rihards Lomazs.

187cm guard Lomazs was born in Tukums on April 13, 1996.

After growing up basketball-wise in Latvia and playing in his home country until 2019, Rihards immediately tasted the Euroleague, playing two seasons at Asvel. Then the move first to Zaragoza, Spain then to Oldenburg in Germany. He started this season in Turkey, at Merkezefendi, averaging 15.7 points.

A Latvian national player, he had to miss the 2023 World Cup due to injury, after having been instrumental in the historic qualification with outstanding performances, above all the game against Serbia of former Teodosic in which he recorded a 33-point performance.

Joining forces with his coach at the Latvian senior national team, Luca Banchi, Lomazs resurfaces in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, following 33 appearances with LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, spread between the 2019-20 and 2020-21 editions of Europe’s premier club continental competition. His new side carrying an 11-5 record sits second in the standings of the 2023-24 Regular Season.

Moving his talents to the Bologna outfit additionally sets up his debut in Italy’s LBA UnipolSai. Previous abroad experience stretched to Turkiye, Germany, and Spain, after France and ASVEL.
