After opening disciplinary procedures, Euroleague Basketball sanctioned Dimitris Giannakopoulos with a fine of 100,000 euros.
The latest penalty to the majority shareholder of Panathinaikos Aktor was announced on Monday.
The incidents prompting the fine concerned actions of the 51-year-old businessman during an ongoing best-of-five series between the Greek club and Anadolu Efes in the 2025 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs.
Per the press release: “Mr. Dimitris Giannakopoulos, the majority shareholder of Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, has been sanctioned with fine amounting a total of €100,000 for statements on social media regarding the officiating performance, disparaging remarks and damages towards other clubs, individuals and Euroleague Basketball organization, in accordance with Article 24.2. b), c) and d) of the Euroleague Basketball Disciplinary Code.”
As for the team coached by Ergin Ataman, defending the EuroLeague championship extends into a do-or-die affair opposite Efes in OAKA Altion on Tuesday. The contenders for a ticket to the 2025 Final Four previously split wins in Athens and Istanbul, leading to a deciding Game 5.
The winner will face Fenerbahce Beko in the Semifinals of the Final Four. On the opposite side of the bracket, Olympiacos awaits Game 5 between AS Monaco to FC Barcelona.
The championship-crowning tournament to end the 2024-25 campaign of Europe’s premier club continental competition will be played between May 23 and 25 in Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena.
In Berlin’s Uber Arena last May, Panathinaikos topped Real Madrid in the championship game to capture a seventh continental title in team history.
