EuroLeague legend Vassilis Spanoulis is marching to his first Final Four as head coach of AS Monaco and will be facing the team he made history with as player: Olympiacos Piraeus.
“All the teams are strong. You can say that Olympiacos were first in regular season and this maybe puts them a bit higher than other teams. I spent a wonderful career at Olympiacos with great memories,” Spanoulis said. “The love of everybody there is undeniable and it goes both ways. This will never change. It’s part of my life. Now, I’m coaching Monaco and I represent Monaco as coach. I’ll try to do everything to win the game with Monaco for 40 minutes we’re opponents. Afterward, there are the same feelings.”
After establishing himself as a EuroLeague great with Panathinaikos Athens and winning Final Four MVP in 2009, Spanoulis made the jump to archrival Olympiacos in 2010. he led the Reds to the back-to-back championship titles of 2012 and 2013, claiming two more Final Four MVP trophies.
Spanoulis was also asked about his superstar player Mike James who wants to win the EuroLeague for the first time in his career.
“Mike James is great like all other players [on the team],” James said. “No pressure. If you see it like this, that it’s is the goal of your career, you will never achieve the goal. We’re here to concentrate and have motivation and play the game of basketball. You can’t put much pressure on yourself. This is a team sport and alll the team is ready to play winning basketball like we do these months I’m here and do whatever it takes to accomplish our goal.”
