Following the recent announcement by the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague about the upcoming expansion of the competition to 20 teams starting from the 2025-26 campaign, Baskonia‘s president, Josean Querejeta, spoke in a press release about the role of his club in the development of the league.
“Above all, I want to highlight Baskonia’s ability to be present at the most important moments and decisions the EuroLeague has experienced over the past 25 years. The competition has evolved, changed its format, and gained value not only in sporting terms but also economically,” he said.
“It’s an important decision that adds value to the league. Today, the EuroLeague is stronger than ever, with the best teams. We must continue building our path without forgetting the value of what we’ve achieved over these 25 years,” Josean Querejeta continued.
“We are reassured by the unity among the clubs and our shared commitment to continued growth. Those who wish to create other types of competitions are entitled to do so, but if we keep moving forward as we are, we have nothing and no one to fear.”
“As a club, we should congratulate ourselves. We will continue, for at least another 10 years, in the best competition in Europe, and we should be proud that Baskonia has always played a role in every major decision,” he also said.
Over the course of the years, since the EuroLeague was born, Baskonia has played a key role within the competition, never winning it but playing twice in the EuroLeague Championship Game.
