Barcelona captain faces uncertain future

Álex Abrines, the 31-year-old captain of Barcelona, is seriously considering retiring from professional basketball, according to Mundo Deportivo. The upcoming game against Unicaja in Málaga could be his last, if Barcelona loses in decisive Game 3 of ACB Quarterfinals.

Abrines has one year left on his contract, but Barcelona is looking to reduce salary costs and has reportedly offered him a new deal with significantly lower pay over a longer term. If no agreement is reached, the club can choose to terminate his current contract this summer.

Known for his long tenure at Barcelona, Abrines has spent ten years with the team across two periods (2012–2016 and 2019–present) and also played three years in the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Throughout his career, he has won multiple titles and earned individual accolades, including the 2016 EuroLeague Rising Star award, and medals with the Spanish National Team.

Personal factors and a reduced role this season have contributed to his decision, which, according to certain sources, may already been made. Abrines will turn 32 on August 1.
