Coming out of solid seasons in Spain and Germany, Derrick Alston Jr. signed a multi-year contract with Virtus Segafredo Bologna.

The Italian club announced the deal on Saturday.

“I’m super excited to officially be a part of the Virtus Bologna family,” the 27-year-old combo forward welcomed his move to Vu Nere, “I’ve heard only amazing things about the city and the culture, and, of course, the amazing fans and the passion that you guys bring to every single game. I can’t wait to get to work and represent this historic club and compete for something special this season. “

The former Boise State standout, son of former player Derrick Alston, spent the 2021-22 journey, his first professional season, in the G League with the Salt Lake City Stars, after playing in the NBA Summer League with the Golden State Warriors and participating in the NBA Preseason with the Utah Jazz. Before the 2022-23 season, he suited up for the Dallas Mavericks in the Summer League, before using overseas options to expand his career. After two years with the Rostock Seawolves and standout showings between the FIBA Europe Cup and easyCredit BBL, he joined BAXI Manresa for the 2024-25 editions of the Basketball Champions League and domestic competitions in Spain.

“Derrick was one of the first players selected together with coach Ivanovic for the new season,” pointed out Paolo Ronci, the general manager of the Italian club, “He arrives at Virtus after an excellent season in an extremely competitive league like the ACB, where he showed his technical and athletic qualities, ready to take on new challenges, in Italy and the Euroleague.”

Alston averaged 17.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per BCL contest en route to the Second Team of the Star Lineup. He was also named to the All-ACB First Team after putting up 16.9 points per game. The next challenge is in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and domestic competitions in Italy.
