Dimitris Giannakopoulos talked about the Jonas Valanciunas situation

Panathinaikos Athens owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos commented for the first time on the ongoing Jonas Valanciunas saga.

“What to say about Valanciunas? We want to sign him, he wants to come to us, but, if his team doesn’t say ‘yes’, what can we do? There are some things that aren’t in our hand. The story will finish and we’ll talk,” Giannakopoulos said on Instagram.

While Valanciunas has a verbal agreement with Panathinaikos on a three-year deal, he’s not a free agent, being bound by his NBA contract. The Lithuanian NBA veteran center has been sent to the Denver Nuggets by the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Dario Saric but the trade has yet to become official.

The Nuggets consider Valanciunas an important asset as much-needed quality backup to Nikola Jokic, something that the team lacked last season. Denver coach David Adelman elaborated on the acquisition of the player and some of the ways he plans to use him.
