Alex Abrines, the international forward and longtime FC Barcelona player, has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball at 31, just days before turning 32.
Abrines shared a heartfelt message on his personal social media:
“Dear fans, the time has come to close a very important chapter in my life. After many years dedicated to professional basketball, I have made the difficult decision to retire.
It wasn’t an easy choice but a well-thought one. Basketball has given me everything: unforgettable experiences, friends who became family, moments of glory, setbacks, lessons… and above all, your unconditional support.
From my beginnings in Mallorca, through Málaga, Barcelona, my NBA years with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and finally my return home to Barça, I have lived a dream.
I also had the privilege to represent the Spanish National Team, which I will always carry with immense pride. Every jersey I wore was an extension of myself, and I gave my all in every training and game.
This path wouldn’t have been possible without the support of many: coaches, teammates, medical staff… but most of all, you, the fans. Thank you for every cheer, message, and encouragement, even in the toughest moments. You lifted me more times than you know. I leave with peace of mind and a full heart.
Basketball will always be part of my life, but now it’s time to be with my family and enjoy a new chapter.
Thank you for always being by my side. Thank you for sharing this journey with me. With all my love, Alex Abrines.”
FC Barcelona confirmed they mutually agreed to end his contract early, which was set to run until June 2026. The club thanked Abrines for his dedication during his ten seasons at Palau Blaugrana and wished him the best in his next chapter.
Abrines played 660 games for Barça, winning 15 titles including three ACB Leagues and three Copa del Rey trophies. He also earned 63 caps for Spain, winning bronze at the 2016 Olympics and EuroBasket 2017.
Earlier this July, Abrines said retirement was a real possibility as he wanted to focus more on family life and new personal goals after a long and successful career.
