Compiling messages in a video, Euroleague Basketball united to support Achille Polonara.
The 33-year-old Italian forward was diagnosed with myeloid leukemia in June, after previously overcoming testicular cancer. He recently revealed treatment leading to finding a bone marrow donor for a transplant, which should take place in the next few days.
Per the press release: “As Achille Polonara faces one of the toughest battles of his life, Euroleague Basketball stands strong alongside him. From ex-teammates and coaches to referees, team presidents, and fans around the world, the basketball community is sending an outpouring of love, strength, and solidarity.
Euroleague Basketball CEO Paulius Motiejunas, Union of EuroLeague Basketball Officials President Sreten Radovic, EuroLeague Head Coaches Board President Dimitris Itoudis, and many of Achille’s former teammates – including Vasilije Micic, Marco Belinelli, and Toko Shengelia – have all shared heartfelt messages of support.
Diagnosed with myeloid leukemia, Achille is set to undergo a transplant in the coming days. A warrior on the court, Achille now faces a different kind of battle. But with the unwavering support of the entire basketball community, he is not alone.
Stay strong, Achille. We’re with you every step of the way. Together, we send you all our love, strength, and hope.”
Playing for Kirolbet/TD Systems Baskonia, Fenerbahce Beko, Zalgiris, Anadolu Efes, and Virtus Segafredo Bologna over the last six years, Polonara made his way to 179 EuroLeague games. In the second tier of Euroleague Basketball from 2013 to 2016, he logged 36 EuroCup appearances.
