A Euroleague Basketball sanction and an LNB decision prevent 34-year-old Cory Joseph from suiting up for AS Monaco

A complicated situation surrounding Cory Joseph and his debut with AS Monaco extended from the EuroLeague to France’s Betclic Elite Regular Season.

La Roca Team has been dealing with a transfer ban imposed by Euroleague Basketball in late November, and thus remains unable to register the newcomer in the continental roster. A similar situation emerging at the domestic level led the LNB, governing body of the top-tier division of France, to bar his registration to the domestic roster as well, citing pending financial obligations.

According to L’Equipe, the referred debt amounts to approximately 500,000 euros.

Monaco has announced an appeal of the LNB decision. However, Joseph is declared ineligible for Round 11 of the 2025-26 Betclic Elite Regular Season and a meeting with SIG Strasbourg in Salle Gaston Medecin on Sunday.

The 34-year-old point guard was officially signed by Monaco last week, on December 4. He since passed the necessary medical tests to complete his move to the team coached by Vassilis Spanoulis, but awaits eligibility to suit up and play for his new team. Monaco currently sits fifth in the EuroLeague standings behind a 9-6 record, and fourth in the Betclic Elite standings behind a 7-2 record.

The Toronto native is a veteran of 953 NBA games across 14 seasons in the league, including the 2013-14 championship run with the San Antonio Spurs. Back in 2011, he was drafted out of Texas by the Spurs with the 29th overall pick, but moved on from the franchise in 2015. He later took his talents to the Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, and Orlando Magic.

His career has also expanded to the international level with Canada, from early spells with the U18 and U19 squads to the senior national team since 2011. Caps include the FIBA World Cup 2019.
